Hey ShootQ Community,
I'm not sure if I've shared our new mobile strategy with you. We've formally decided to stop developing our iPhone app and continue with a "Platform Agnostic" mobile-optimized web application. This has a variety of advantages for both us and you - mainly quick updates, a better user experience, and compatibility with both iPhone and Android.
If I could grade our mobile support right now, I would give us a D. We have an app that's somewhat useful to about half of our subscribers. Yet iPhone users still really don't like the app, and Android users don't have one at all. So let's start over.
Realistically, ShootQ is a huge app and we can't cram it all into a tiny phone. So here's my question: if we create a mobile web app for your phone, what would you want to use it for? What do you wish you could do in ShootQ while on your phone? Sign contracts? Call customers? Send email templates?
Here's a hint: you can't answer "everything the web app does."
Also, let's start by focusing on phones. I think that tablets (iPads) have a whole different use case. Let's do that next. Post away!

Oh. Don't give us features. Tell us what you're trying to do. What problems do you face when you're trying to run your business from your phone?
For the most part when running android 2.2 or higher on a tablet or phone You can pretty much navigate and view the site through your web browser. What would be nice on a mobile site would be to access your calendar and the ability to modify it in shoots, Send any form of correspondence including proposal, Book shoots, and access billing for shoots. I think those are the core things you need on the go.
Cool. Thanks, Edwin. We would, of course, make it possible to access the "full HTML site" via any smartphone.
Hey - don't you work for us? Isn't this cheating? :)
Consider me a Guinea pig since I own both an android and android table
I would love to see quicker and easier access to the tasks on my phone. With the current app, I hate having to dig through to find shoot specific tasks. I would much prefer a more global view of everything sorted by due dates, as opposed to having to click 7 times to check something off the list.
Right off the top of my head...the biggest hold-back with the way I use the app is: I would love to be able to copy and paste from the phone text (including the phone numbers). For example, was trying to send my second shooter the address to the church, and I had to find a piece of paper to write it down first...or I had to go in and out and just keep chanting it out loud. Same with texting clients...when I get to a shoot and I realize I need to tell them something (but they aren't saved in my phone contacts), I don't always want to call them..just text them. But I have to find another way of getting the number to the texting screen.
I currently use the ap mode most for:
1. Billing (when I get a check, rather than having to go to my computer to log it, I LOVE being able to mark it paid on my phone)
2. Contract viewing (to remember if they got an album, etc...)
3. Referring to the questionnaires they've responded to on location (the wedding day one is huge...as it holds my timeline and formal photo list)
4. I would love to use it for checking off tasks (sometimes, when I lie in bed at night, it would a good way to go back over what I did that day as I tend to forget to mark it off during the day) but right now, you have to click on a task, and then go to the next screen to check it off. would love to be able to do a quick check off down the list. (But I would move the task list from the opening page so you don't get accidental check-offs.) :)
The information I would like to have in the field would be: clients contact info, clients booked packages/orders, and access to questionnaires. These items are the biggies for me, the things that frustrate me the most about not having a mobile solution. However, access to the emails in the correspondence and the master tasks' list (not within each shoot, but like the task tab on the main site) would be amazing!
What Darbi said! Billing, contract/package viewing, questionnaires so I don't have to make print outs and tasks. All great tools to have in the palm of my hand.
Oh! And the ability to text my client from the ShootQ app
I'll repeat mine here, just so it's all in one place. Client contact info where it's easy to phone or text. Billing would be nice because I don't often remember in my studio what someone owes me.
Andrew do you guys have the ability to know what percentage of your clients are syncing their ShootQ accounts with other third party programs such as Google Calendar or outlook? It seems that figuring out ways to improve the relationship of these programs may be provide greater use.
Here are the three things kinds of info I need from shootq on the go: (again not asking for the full functionality of shootQ, Not even the ability to edit any of my info in the cloud as much as just access my information)
Schedule/calendar... especially if my appointments had an attachment that contained contact info... wow.
Contact info
Tasks workflow
Google has already developed lightweight and functional web apps for calendar, contacts, and tasks that can be accessed from any phone or tablet.
Its just a thought I am not programer so I have no idea what I am asking.
We purchased an iPad with one of it's purposes being the bridal show we are attending in January. Instead of having clients sign contracts on paper, we want to enter them as a lead on the iPad choose the package and then enter their billing info and make the payment thru shootq.
If there was an app for this to streamline the process, and make it simpler and faster considering the volume and traffic we will incur, that would be huge.
I love Ben's idea and also have no idea if that's a complicated process. The calendar syncing function you guys have with the different calendar systems works great. I use a third party calendar app and it shows all my appointments on the front of my phone. If there was a way to pull my my shootq bookings (don't want all the leads) contact info into my phone contacts in the same sort of way, that would be great. I would rarely need to go to an online version of SQ if I could do that. In fact, there may already be a way for me to do that by downloading the data and uploading it somewhere else, like my verizon, hmmmm....
Great stuff, everyone! I am going to peruse this more on Monday and start making some lists. Keep it comin!
I've actually manually been bringing all my clients into the address book on my phone under a separate folder (to distinguish the ringer) for a while now; its one of my post booking processes. If this could be done with Shootq somehow that would be awesome! Even it wasn't by syncing, just creating the standard vCard format would be fine so they could be manually put into the phone electronically.
Mobile Phone Cheat Sheets:
I'd love a way to create a compact cheat sheet that's easily referable, on a per shot basis, and easy to take a screen shot of. This way I can get Mom's Dad's Groom's Bride's info, selected questionnaire answers and remarks, and schedule notes all onto one compact cheat sheet that I can quickly pull up on my phone any time I need to remember someone's name or number. As the iphone app stands, it most of the info I need is somewhere in there, but the important info are all miles away from each other, and it's lots of clicking to get to the pertinent info I need.
I would like to access client info and the Calender and be able to add appointments and leads.
Offline access is super important. To be able to access it while flying, no access to data networks etc.
I agree with Shaun. My most pressing need is client interaction at bridal shows. anything that moves me off paper for contact info and contracts is great.
With the current ShootQ iphone app, my favorite thing is the push notifications when I've booked / received a payment etc. I don't use the app much for day to day, but the notification is nice to draw my attention and get me to the computer.
This will be a rehash of much of what was said above, but I feel it's important to have and would greatly help so I'll rehash a way!
-I would love to be able to edit contact information on the go. That being said, I would also love a way to download contact information to the phone. Someone said it above, even a v-card download would work, though automation would be preferable
-Questionnaires/Correspondence overview. Being able to view these items when I'm out of the office is crucial. I try to spend as much time away from the computer as possible, so having this information upfront is great.
-Task management. Currently, there is no real good way to go about managing tasks. An overview, shoot agnostic approach would work better I think. I would still like to be able to drill down while viewing a shoot to see shoot specific tasks though.
-Ability to easily copy and paste text into any field. Ability to send texts from within the app/webapp would be nice too, though I think I would prefer to have the contact information downloaded to my phone.
I think it all boils down to being able to do whatever is needed in terms of shoot management. I know this is a large chunk of ShootQ, but all of the backside management can be done on the computer. I just want to be able to edit, manage and reference shoot data where ever I am. That's the true beauty of mobile apps.
Have a large, uncluttered and clear login screen that doesn't require a lot of pinch and zooming to find. Ability to access financial info, questionnaires, contact information, open addresses in navigation software by selecting them. Respond to new leads with templated email and automatically attached pricing sheet so no time is lost when on the road.
Ability to change status of leads and add notes to them.
I am trying to see my tasks on my phone the same as I can see them online. Not the dashboard view but my managed view by what options i have checked on the tasks tab in the browser. If these could also be able to be fetched from the server every so many minutes and sync with the Reminders app in iOS 5 so they showed up in the notification window as well this would be AWESOME. Truly help to integrate the workflow and be able to add things I need to do on the run in the Reminders App (or have Siri do it for me if I had a new 4S) and then that sync with my ShootQ tasks.
I could go for a sweet light saber to take care of those uncles that "used" to be a photographer and get in my way.
That and/or echoing Nathan Bell, I love the push notifications that at least get me to the computer. That and being able to send out questionnaires and whatnot to basically be as speedy as possible to a new client. It's all about impressing right? Well yeah, here, I'll try to organize my thoughts:
The purpose of this app is to function as a supplement to the website app when you just can't be at the computer. So either functions that we would at some point need to get to or change at a shoot, or when a client is making first contact. Those things I think are crucial for a mobile user to have easy access to, and the ability to edit on the fly. Thanks guys for looking in to all of this!!! I love ShootQ and I'd be scrambling without it.
Since you've been in the planning stages of this for about 6-7 months, now. Can you give us an update? Are you making any progress on this? Is there a timetable of when we could expect to see any of this?
Also, since you are no longer supporting or updating the iPhone app, why are you still using the image of the phone app on the home page to promote the product? As a potential customer, that would excite me to see the app, only to be disappointed that it is no longer being supported. *Just my two-cents*
I have a trial ShootQ account. I have not used it.(Time issues) Looking for a management software to help with that problem. I am concerned about the android access issue. I know android can access a lot of native platforms without having a special program. Can any current android user tell me what the current access and usability issues are? Can you operate the software enough on android to warrent the purchase of shootQ?
Thank you,
-J
Hey Jason, I'm an android user and for the functionality I need (looking up phone numbers, details, etc.) out of the office, it's fine, if a little slow. I expect when I move up to 4g I'll be able to do most things simply on the web.
That said, my phone is a small part of my ShootQ experience. Leads come directly to my email and invoices are sent automatically. I've never tried to book anyone on the tiny screen, I just wait till I'm in the office to do that. Unless you're rarely in front of a computer, I wouldn't base my ShootQ purchase on whether or not you get full functionality with your phone. The ease at which you can handle leads, clients, invoicing and payments is what ShootQ is all about. Personally, I couldn't run my studio without it.
